Cord Cutting Ritual: Benefits, Expectations & What Happens After

in Rituals, Meditation & Practices, Explore the Journal, Shamanic Healing & Journeying

What Is a Cord Cutting Ritual?

A cord cutting ritual is a spiritual practice used in many energy healing and shamanic traditions. It offers a symbolic way of releasing emotional or energetic attachments that may still be influencing our thoughts, feelings, or sense of well-being.

Over time, we form connections with people, places, and experiences. Many of these bonds are supportive and nourishing. Others can become emotionally heavy or difficult to release long after a situation has changed.

A cord cutting ritual creates a symbolic moment of release. It allows us to acknowledge a connection that may no longer be serving us in the same way and begin restoring a greater sense of balance and autonomy.

Rather than erasing the past—or pretending a relationship or experience never mattered—the intention is to change our relationship with what we have been carrying.

Many people wonder what happens after a cord cutting ritual, whether the other person is affected, and how they will know if the cord cutting has worked. The experience can be different for everyone, and the changes are often more subtle than dramatic.

How to Cut Energetic Cords

Cutting energetic cords is a symbolic practice used in many spiritual traditions to release emotional attachments that may still influence your thoughts, feelings, or sense of well-being.

These cords are not physical structures. Instead, they represent the emotional and energetic connections that can form between people through shared experiences, relationships, and memories.

When a relationship ends or becomes unhealthy, we may continue to feel emotionally connected to the person or pulled back into familiar patterns. A cord cutting ritual offers a way to consciously work with that attachment and create space for something to shift.

Different traditions approach cord cutting in different ways. Some practices involve visualization, meditation, guided journeying, or symbolic gestures such as cutting a ribbon or cord to represent release.

The purpose isn’t to erase the past or deny the relationship that existed. Rather, it is to change your relationship with the attachment so you can move forward with greater clarity and autonomy.

In my practice at Sacred Shadow Work, cord cutting may be approached through shamanic healing and guided inner journeying, where we can also explore some of the deeper emotional dynamics connected to the relationship or experience.

When a Cord Cutting Ritual Can Be Helpful

In my practice, I often recommend exploring cord cutting when someone finds themselves repeatedly thinking about a particular person or situation and feels unable to move forward.

Sometimes a connection continues to influence our thoughts and feelings long after a relationship or situation has changed. This can leave us feeling drained, distracted, or caught in patterns we would like to release.

A cord cutting ritual may be helpful when you notice experiences such as:

  • constantly thinking about someone from the past
  • feeling emotionally pulled back into an old relationship dynamic
  • difficulty letting go of resentment, grief, or attachment
  • feeling drained after certain interactions
  • sensing that a situation still has a strong emotional hold on you

The purpose isn’t to reject or erase the relationship. Instead, the ritual creates an opportunity to work with the emotional or energetic intensity that may still be present and reconnect with your own sense of autonomy.

Benefits of a Cord Cutting Ritual

A cord cutting ritual can be a powerful and meaningful experience for people who feel ready to release old attachments and move forward with greater clarity.

Some of the benefits people often experience include:

Emotional Healing
Releasing energetic ties can help individuals process lingering emotional wounds and begin moving forward from past experiences.

Clarity and Focus
Letting go of unhealthy attachments can create space to refocus attention on personal goals, values, and well-being.

Personal Empowerment
The ritual encourages individuals to reclaim their energy and make choices that better support their growth.

Reduced Stress and Mental Preoccupation
When draining emotional connections are released, many people notice a decrease in tension and mental preoccupation.

Spiritual Growth
Cord cutting can create space for new experiences, insights, and relationships to emerge.

Healthier Relationships
By releasing unhealthy dynamics, individuals often become more open to forming relationships that feel balanced and supportive.

Fresh Beginnings
Many people experience cord cutting as a symbolic turning point, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their life.

Overall, a cord cutting ritual can be a deeply personal experience that encourages healing, clarity, and emotional renewal.

How Does Cord Cutting Affect the Other Person?

Cord cutting is primarily about changing your relationship to the connection, rather than trying to change or control another person.

When you begin releasing your attachment to an old dynamic, the way you relate to that person may start to change. You might feel less emotionally pulled into the relationship, become clearer about your boundaries, or notice that situations that once triggered a strong reaction no longer have quite the same hold over you.

The other person may or may not notice that something has changed.

Cord cutting does not require another person’s participation, nor does it erase their feelings, memories, or ability to make their own choices. The focus of the ritual is on what you are ready to release within your own experience.

Sometimes when one person stops participating in an old relationship pattern, the dynamic between two people naturally changes as well. But the purpose of cord cutting isn’t to create a particular response in someone else.

How Do You Know If Cord Cutting Is Working?

A cord cutting doesn’t always create a dramatic or immediate change.

Sometimes the signs are quite subtle.

You may notice that:

  • you think about the person less often
  • memories don’t carry the same emotional charge
  • you feel less compelled to check on, contact, or respond to them
  • familiar interactions don’t trigger you in quite the same way
  • your boundaries feel clearer
  • you have more energy or attention available for your own life
  • you simply feel more like yourself again

You may also discover that there are additional layers underneath the original attachment—grief, anger, fear, abandonment, rejection, or an old pattern that reaches further back than the relationship itself.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the cord cutting hasn’t worked. It may simply reveal something deeper that is ready for your attention.

Healing rarely happens all at once. Sometimes a cord cutting is an important moment of release; other times it becomes the beginning of understanding what kept the connection so strong in the first place.

Why Cord Cutting Can Feel Emotional

Even when a relationship or situation has been difficult, releasing our attachment to it can bring up unexpected emotions.

The connection we formed with someone was real. There may be memories, hopes, habits, disappointments, grief, or parts of ourselves that became deeply connected to the relationship.

So when we consciously choose to release that connection, there can sometimes be a sense of loss.

For some people, this can feel like a quiet grieving process.

It doesn’t necessarily mean anything has gone wrong. We may simply be processing what the relationship meant to us and adjusting to relating to it differently.

With time, many people notice more emotional space, clarity, or a renewed sense of themselves.

In my work, these emotional responses can also become an invitation to listen more deeply to the parts of ourselves that were connected to the relationship.

What Happens After a Cord Cutting Ritual?

There is no single way you are supposed to feel after a cord cutting ritual.

Some people describe feeling lighter, calmer, clearer, or more spacious. Others may feel emotional, tired, tender, unsettled, or simply more reflective for a while. And some people notice very little immediately.

None of these responses, by themselves, determine whether the ritual has “worked.”

Often, what matters more is what you begin noticing over the following days or weeks: how you think about the person, how strongly you react to old memories, what boundaries feel possible, and whether the relationship or situation continues to occupy the same amount of emotional space.

If difficult emotions arise, give yourself room to process them rather than assuming they are a negative side effect of the ritual.

Grounding After a Cord Cutting Ritual

After any energetic or spiritual practice, grounding is an important part of the process.

Grounding helps the body integrate the emotional and energetic changes that occurred during the ritual and supports the nervous system in returning to a calm and balanced state.

Some helpful grounding practices include:

  • Rest and relaxation – Allow yourself quiet time to process the experience.
  • Gentle stretching or yoga – Light movement can release physical tension and help energy settle.
  • Hydration – Drinking water supports the body as it adjusts after emotional or energetic release.
  • Warm baths or showers – A bath with Epsom salts can help soothe the body and encourage relaxation.
  • Meditation or mindful breathing – Bringing attention to the breath can help ground you in the present moment.
  • Journaling – Writing down thoughts and emotions can help integrate insights and release lingering feelings.

Taking some time to care for yourself after a ritual can give you space to process what came up and notice what may be shifting.

Do Energetic Cords Grow Back?

From an energetic or spiritual perspective, new cords can form after a cord cutting ritual.

Everything in life is connected, and relationships naturally create energetic bonds between people. These connections are part of how we experience community, love, and shared experience.

I often think about this connection in a way that resembles the mycelium network found beneath forests. Just as trees communicate and share nutrients through these hidden networks, human relationships also form invisible connections that link us to one another.

We cannot completely disconnect from the world around us — nor would we want to.

However, sometimes the energetic cords between people become unhealthy or draining. When this happens, a cord cutting ritual allows us to release the old pattern so that a healthier connection can form.

After a cord cutting, you often become a slightly different person. Your perspective changes, your boundaries become clearer, and the choices you make moving forward reflect that shift.

As a result, if new cords do form, they tend to carry a different quality of energy.

In many ways, this renewal is a beautiful part of the healing process.

Maintaining Healthy Boundaries After Cord Cutting

If you would like to prevent old patterns from re-establishing themselves, maintaining healthy boundaries after the ritual is important.

Some helpful practices include:

Setting clear boundaries
Communicate your needs and limits in relationships where possible.

Limiting communication
Reducing contact can create the space needed for emotional distance to develop.

Focusing on self-care
Engage in activities that support your well-being and reconnect you with your own interests and friendships.

Reflecting on your emotions
Take time to understand what you learned from the experience and what you want moving forward.

Seeking support
Talking with trusted friends or a professional can provide perspective and encouragement.

Staying engaged in life
Exploring new hobbies, interests, or creative pursuits helps redirect your energy toward growth.

Ultimately, the goal is to remain connected to yourself and ensure that your choices reflect your values and well-being.

A Gentle Invitation

Cord cutting can be a meaningful way of releasing a connection that continues to feel emotionally or energetically present. Sometimes the cord itself is what needs attention. Other times, the connection can lead us toward deeper patterns, old wounds, or experiences that are still asking to be understood.

Cord cutting is one of the practices I may draw upon within a Shamanic Healing session. Rather than approaching it as a stand-alone ritual, we begin with what you are experiencing and explore what may be underneath the connection—why it continues to have a hold, what may be ready to shift, and what you need in order to move forward.

Depending on what emerges, our work may include cord cutting alongside shamanic journeying, energy medicine, compassionate conversation, or other practices that support the deeper healing process.

If you find yourself repeatedly pulled back into the same relationship, person, memory, or pattern despite your efforts to let go, a Shamanic Healing session can offer a space to explore what may still be holding that connection in place.
